Luzia is a model from the East coast that I worked with a few months ago when she came through town. She stayed with me at my apartment the first night she arrived and then we shot the next day.
When we met, she told me that she’d had a shoot out in the woods the previous day and had gotten poison ivy. She was really concerned about it because she had some shoots lined up with film photographers who didn’t do a lot of retouching.
I was a little worried since I had no idea how bad it was. I got the impression her whole midsection was going to be covered with it. I was happily surprised when we started shooting to see that there were only a few spots, you can see one towards her right hip in this shot. I told her they wouldn’t read much with the soft nature of the Polaroid film I’m using (it’s actually called Softtone).
We had a really fun shoot, she was great to work with. She’s very sweet and creative. I’d heard from a couple of mutual friends that she was basically the nicest person in the world and it seemed pretty true.
I’ve enjoyed working with all kinds of models but I have had some of the best experiences with traveling art models. They generally are really invested in what they’re doing, and love making images.
