Echo’s been one of my huge model crushes for a couple of years now, meaning someone I was just dying to shoot. She lives out East but finally is here in Portland, We’ve had two wonderful shoots and we’ll be shooting more.
She brings a lot of energy and emotion to her work, which I really love. This shoot was even more impressive to me because she’d had three long days of shooting in a row and still was able to bring it.
I mentioned in my last post that I’m experimenting with projecting Super 8 film onto models. Echo and I shot some of those for a while, and then we did this set.
This image is actually lit with the Super 8 projector. I bought a newer Bell & Howell model recently and was surprised to see that there’s a piece of metal over the film gate with holes in it. My guess is that this was designed to make the light less diffuse and brighter at a distance. When there’s no film being projected it forms small dots of light that get bigger and more diffuse as the focus is adjusted. I thought immediately that I’d like to try this as a light and I ended up really liking it. I’m sure I’ll shoot more images lit this way.
That’s another great thing about Echo, she’s extremely creative and very willing to experiment. I feel very comfortable busting out different things with her, even if I don’t know if they will work. That’s a real key to experimentation, having the ability to fail, and she understands that completely.
