Shooting with Echo was really wonderful, but she’s had an impact on my work beyond that. She gave me some great feedback on my work, including images she wasn’t in, and I was able to observe her process too. She was getting ready to launch her own web site during the time she stayed with me and I saw a lot of the images she was receiving from other photographers. She’d share the images with me and we’d talk about which ones she liked most and why.
I think she has a really great eye, and that’s one of the reasons she’s doing so well as a model. She’s able to find the images that represent her well, and she seeks out very strong photographers to work with. She likes images with emotion and life in them, and images that are just plain weird and different than her current work.
Our conversations got me thinking a lot about my work and it’s going to have a huge impact on my next Polaroid project. I’m planning to start shooting the Impossible Project’s PZ 680 film, and shooting a lot of different kinds of locations and wardrobe than I have in my Softtone series. The last series was intentionally minimal but the next one won’t be.
This Polaroid is something that I would not have come up with on my own, I wouldn’t have asked a model to pose like this with her head hidden. And yet I think it’s a really interesting image. That’s the beauty of collaboration — working together you can end up making something that none of you would ever have thought of on your own.
